Furniture as art

Furniture is utilitarian, but it’s also an opportunity to show people who you are. Furniture is such a big part of the home; your dining table, your bedside table, your bathroom vanity. You look at these things, use them and touch them every single day. They should be beautiful, made to last and evocative of your style.

Kind words from clients

Our Sassafras Coffee Table is admired and commented on by everyone who comes into my home.
A piece of work like this is impossible to access these days, we searched for a solution for 2 years, then I remembered you made us a piece some years ago……you have created exactly what we hoped for, Richard. We will continue to enjoy for many years to come.
— Klara, Shoreham
I’m a huge admirer of Richard’s craftsmanship and am proud to own several cherished pieces from his collection, including a bookcase, coffee table, hall table, dining table with accompanying bench seats, mirror and a queen size bed featuring underneath drawers (yes, I’m a bit of a fan).

Each piece has been made in collaboration with me, according to my design tastes, required measurements and the general feel I want to create within my home. What I love most about Richard’s furniture is that each piece is truly a one-off, made from beautiful reclaimed old timbers that I know I’ll have to enjoy for a lifetime.
— Daniel, Sydney
Richard Amy is a professional craftsman of exquisite wooden furniture.

We have engaged him over a number of years to design and build our kitchen (Blackwood and Jarrah), bathroom vanities (Celery Top Pine), bookcases (Blackwood and Sassafras), coffee tables (Jarrah) and bedside tables (Sassafras). Richard understands the wood he works with and has an exceptional eye for detail and creative flare. When given a brief to build a particular piece, Richard manages to bring out the very best in the timber and to make a timeless, unique piece that we never tire of admiring. We propose to engage Richard in the future to design and build further signature pieces for our home. We have no hesitation in recommending Richard as an exceptional craftsman of fine furniture.
— Phil and Penny, Red Hill

About Me

It all started when…

I made my first piece of furniture, a dining table, in my parent’s shed when I was 17. I’ve loved turning timber into pieces of artwork for people’s homes ever since.

Trained by an Icelandic master craftsman named Kristian Runnolfssen, I make furniture in old ways that ensure durability, quality and beauty.

I love my work, which is why I’m still doing it 45 years later.

My workshop is based in Somerville on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula and I invite you to make an appointment to visit me.
